Judge Lynn

My Mothers Rules is a humorous memoir recounting the life Judge Toler lived in the shadow of mental illness. It goes on to chronicle her mother's unique emotional abilities and demonstrates how they, more than anything else, authored her best moments on the bench.

Throughout the course of telling her stories, Judge Toler gives the reader rules to follow to help them develop their own emotional acumen. It is her contention that we are not an emotionally well practiced society (witness: air rage, road rage, hockey rage...) and that we must make a greater concious effort to acquire emotional skills. This book helps people do that.

"There is nothing you have more control over than yourself. Your emotions are one of the few arenas in which you can dictate terms. In short, my mother's rules are about the proper emotion: what it is and how to find it. If you obey these rules, you will be better at thinking your way through how you feel. But I don't want you to take my word for it. In this book, I intend to offer proof."
